Jazz Band
Jazz Band is an advanced performance group. The instrumentation is based on traditional "Big Band" setup which includes a rhythm section (drums, bass, piano, and sometimes guitar) and horns (4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor saxophones and a baritone saxophone). In the past, an appropriate number of students for each instrument has shown interest. A few "extra" students will be accepted since the main purpose for this ensemble is for students to gain experience playing jazz music. However, if there are too many students showing interest on a particular instrument then students will be selected through an audition for that instrument.
The Jazz Band performs at both concerts and can take part in our field trip to New York City. The jazz band will attend a two hour workshop at Lincoln Center where they will be coached by a professional jazz clinician, attend a Broadway musical and have dinner at Ellen's Stardust Diner. It is a great real life experience for young musicians. Each of the events are expensive on their own, even the travel is pricey. Combined the cost can be prohibitive. We do all we can to keep the cost down but we also will be doing a popular fundraiser, Butterbraids, within the first month of school to help students keep the cost down.
